What is a DSG mechatronic assembly?
The mechatronic unit combines two systems that used to be separate: the hydraulic control block (the valve body, with its solenoid valves and hydraulic channels) and the electronic control unit (the TCU) that decides when to pressurize each circuit.
In a DSG, the mechatronic unit controls clutch engagement and gear selection. It reads pressure and speed signals, drives the solenoid valves, and communicates with the rest of the vehicle over the CAN network. Because it contains both hydraulics and electronics, a fault in either half can produce the same symptoms — which is why diagnosis matters before replacing the unit.
DSG Clinic supplies mechatronic units as complete assemblies, including their electronics. They are not complete gearboxes, and they are not supplied as bare electronic modules.
What a DSG mechatronic unit includes
A mechatronic assembly combines hydraulic and electronic components in one unit. The exact content, layout and connector position vary between DSG families — the list below describes the general anatomy.
Hydraulic valve body
Cast block containing the hydraulic channels, spool valves and pressure regulation circuits that route fluid to the clutches and shift actuators.
Solenoid valves
Electrically driven valves that control clutch pressure and gear actuation in response to signals from the control unit.
Sensors
Hydraulic pressure sensors, and on most families input / output speed and temperature sensors used by the control unit for closed-loop control.
Transmission control unit (TCU)
The electronic module integrated into the assembly. It runs the shift strategy, reads sensor inputs and drives the solenoid valves.
Connector interface
Vehicle-side connector and internal wiring that link the mechatronic unit to the transmission harness, power supply and CAN network.
Hydraulic sealing interface
Mating face and seals that separate the mechatronic unit from the gearbox housing and the oil circuit.
Questions about DSG mechatronic units
Is a mechatronic unit a complete gearbox?
No. The mechatronic unit is a component of the transmission — the hydraulic control block and the electronic control unit combined. It is not a complete gearbox and it is not supplied as a bare electronic module.
Do you supply the mechatronic unit with electronics?
Yes. DSG Clinic supplies mechatronic units as complete assemblies, including their electronics, matched to the DSG family.
What is an exchange unit?
An exchange unit returns a reconditioned assembly in place of your old one. Where exchange is available, the exchange price depends on the model. Indicate exchange interest in the quotation request.
How do I know which mechatronic unit fits my car?
The part number from the existing unit is the most reliable identifier, together with the DSG family and, where possible, the VIN. Vehicle make and model alone is not reliable.
Can a mechatronic unit be repaired instead of replaced?
It depends on the fault. Some faults are mechanical or hydraulic and may be repairable; others require replacement of the assembly. Send the fault codes and symptoms and we will advise.
